EditorialExploring the contributions to ePIC 2011, the 9th ePortfolio and Identity conference, gives a sense of the vitality and the diversity of the ePortfolio movement worldwide. Authors from 24 countries bring their testimonies on the progress made and challenges facing the ePortfolio and identity community.It is reassuring to witness that ePortfolio initiatives continue to be developed at national (1) and regional levels (2), as well as within professions (3), sectors (4), individual institutions (5) and courses (6). ePortfolio initiatives cover the need for making learning visible, assessment, recognition of informal learning and accreditation of prior learning, the transformation of curriculum as well as the construction of one's identity, personal and professional. Large scale initiatives, national, regional or within professional sectors elicit the need for standards and methods for their adoption. While initial standardisation efforts focused on the format of data exchanged across systems and institutions (IMS ePortfolio, Leap2A), over the last years, the focus has started to move towards personal data protection, privacy and trust. This is reflected in two contributions from The Netherlands (7 and 8). The idea that individuals should control the exploitation of their personal data (9), in ePortfolios and beyond, is growing and the technology that makes it possible exists (10). While technology and standards play an important role in facilitating the creation and exploitation of ePortfolios, the most important contribution of ePIC 2011 is to provide material and intelligence to support informed practice and informed decisions at institutional level. One dominant theme across contributions is the need for 'integration' (integrated learning, integrated environment, integrate knowledge, integrated assessment, etc.). Without proper integration and institutional transformation, ePortfolios are at risk of becoming one more thing to do on top of 'normal work', an additional formal exercise required by institutions with no real value for the learner. Good ePortfolio implementation requires change management (11) within educational institutions and beyond. So whether you are looking to improve your own practice, share or find ideas and partners for your ePortfolio and identity projects, have a look at the programme and register for the conference (early-bird rate applies until 15 May!). Draft programme publishedWe are pleased to announce the first draft of the progamme published after a preliminary round of reviews, with over 70 contributions accepted from 24 countries. More submissions are expected over the next weeks as the deadline for submissions is extended until 20 May. The first day of the programme (11 July) is mainly dedicated to workshops that will satisfy not only the ePortfolio beginner but also the expert. Helen Barrett will provide a series of workshops dedicated to building ePortfolios using web 2.0 technologies, as well as "adding voice" to ePortfolios. Alison Rosemary James from the London College of Fashion will demonstrate her online visual thinking tool, PPD Coach - a starter component of the ePortfolio currently under development at the University of the Arts London. Other workshops will offer an opportunity to explore more in depth specific ePortfolios systems as well as technical and implementation issues. On the second and third days, a wide number of presentations will address internationally topical issues in the field of healthcare education, employment, continuing professional development, assessment and identity construction.  Mark Stiles is Professor of Technology Supported Learning and Head of Learning Development and Innovation at Staffordshire University. Mark's team are responsible for managing and facilitating eLearning, and for research and development in strategy, policy, technology, and pedagogy for eLearning. Recently, he and his team have been working on organisational issues around the embedding of eLearning, and their work on eLearning Policy and quality assurance for eLearning has received considerable national attention. He has led many projects for JISC and other organisations, including the COSE VLE project, interoperability pilots, SURF X4L (on content reuse) and Staffordshire ICE (interoperation of VLEs with e-aggregators). He is now leading the JISC SUNIWE (web services for individualised support to eLearners) and SURF WBL (e-support for work-based learning) projects. Mark has also carried out various evaluations, including one of the JISC DiVLE programme. He is a regular speaker and has published widely in the field. Donald Clark was CEO and one of the original founders of Epic Group
plc, which established itself as the leading company in the UK
e-learning market, floated on the Stock Market in 1996 and sold in 2005.
Describing himself as ‘free from the tyranny of employment’, he is now a board member of Ufi/learndirect, Caspian Learning (learning games tool provider), LearningPool (content provider), Brighton Arts Festival, and a school governor. Donald has also won many awards for the design and implementation of e-learning, notably the ‘Outstanding Achievement in e-learning Award’ and has advised the World Bank, United Nations and NATO on technology in learning. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences and also a regular (and controversial) blogger on e-learning. Extension of the call for contributions

Over the last weeks, 4 ePortfolio organisations* have worked towards a collective calendar of educational events, news and opportunities of interest to the world-wide ePortfolio community. You can visit and contribute to the calendar at: www.epforum.org. This is only a draft. Other solutions are being explored, also we are very interested to collect your inputs, feedback and suggestions.
